Indonesia declared a state of emergency in the western province of Riau on Tuesday, as forest and land fires continue to blaze on the island of Sumatra, with no signs of easing.

"The governor has declared an emergency now, to be able to prevent a repeat of the haze that occurred in 2015," provincial government spokesperson Darusman told reporters.

Although the smog from the fire has not yet reached urban areas, the government deployed around 500 military and police personnel and a water-bombing helicopter to help put out the fire and contain the smog.

Indonesian fires are set every year by palm oil plantation companies to clear land. This perennial task sends thick choking smog to Southeast Asia, causing serious health concerns.

Last year's forest fires were at peak levels due to the prolonged dry season, and lasted months longer than usual, until the rainy season finally arrived.

Following last year's fires, the Indonesian government has faced strong pressure from its neighbouring countries to prevent or suppress these fires.

This year, Indonesian President Joko Widodo set up an agency to restore two million hectares of carbon-rich peatlands, which produce more smog than forest fires.
