Instagram may finally let users rewind and fast forward through videos

This isn't the first time Instagram's tested this out, though...

Instagram users, rejoice! One of the most basic multimedia features may soon be coming to the platform.

The Facebook-owned photo sharing social network is currently testing a seek bar on the app which would allow users to scroll backwards or forwards through a video.

If a user is one of the lucky select few picked to test out the feature, all they have to do is press down on an Instagram video and slide their finger to the left or the right. A seek bar will appear embedded at the top of the video, complete with a pop-up timecode.

Developer Jane Manchun Wong uncovered Instagram’s latest new trial feature. Wong has gained a following for discovering new features being tested in popular apps. The developer has recently broken news on an array of other new Instagram features currently being tested by the company such as public collections, video co-watching, and a grace period to revert back to an old Instagram username.

The basic ability to scrub through a video, a feature found on pretty much every other online platform hosting video, has long been missing from Instagram. However, this isn’t the first time it made a trial appearance on the app.

Users have been reporting being able to temporarily fast forward and rewind videos on Instagram as far back as 2017. In each case, the feature seems to have worked for a few days before being disabled again. Reports of the Instagram seek bar appearing in the app look to have dropped off completely by early 2018.

Instagram already has a video scrubbing feature on its less-popular YouTube competitor, IGTV. At long last, perhaps this most basic rewind and fast forwarding ability will finally come to the Instagram app most people actually use.
