Football mascot's new name inspired by Lionel Messi is so punny it hurts

Genius or pure evil?

On Saturday the Scottish championship team Inverness Caledonian Thistle (ICTFC) unveiled what was either genius or pure evil.

At the IRN-BRU Scottish Challenge Cup Final against Dumbarton, ICTFC introduced their new mascot.

Lionel. Nessi.

ICTFC Chairman Graham Rae explained that the idea for a new mascot came from a fan forum earlier in the season, and that season ticket holders Bob and Kath Fraser came up with Lionel Nessie.

"I was immediately taken with the idea," said Rae. "Nessie lives right on our doorstep and draws thousands of tourists from throughout the world to our area every year. For the football context,  Lionel Messi is one of the best players ever to have played the game. Messi rhymes with Nessie --  and so we have the splendid combination of Lionel Nessi."

ICTFC won the match, so clearly the addition of Lionel Nessi was a wise move.
