Now you, too, can get the iOS 10 beta

If you’ve wanted to try out all the new stuff in iOS 10, you can do it now.

Apple on Thursday released the first public beta for iOS 10. This beta comes two days after Apple seeded iOS 10 beta 2 to developers and, like last year, it offers adventurous users a chance to check out iOS 10 on their iPhones, iPod touches and iPads before its official release this fall.

If you want to access the iOS 10 public beta, sign-up with your Apple ID at beta.apple.com. Once the beta is live, you’ll get an email link to download the software.

It’s important to remember that this is beta software. There will be bugs. It’s stable enough to test, but Apple still recommends users install it on a secondary iOS device.

Expect Apple to release updates periodically over the next few months. And don’t worry: if you sign up for the consumer beta, you’ll still be able to upgrade to the final version of iOS 9 when it ships this fall.

New stuff in iOS 10

iOS 10 brings a bunch of new features and improvements, including a redesigned lock screen and notifications, major enhancements to Siri and a redesigned Apple Music and Apple News app. There’s also a new Home app for controlling your smart home.

But the biggest changes are coming to Messages, whose many updates include stickers, bigger emoji, invisible ink and rich links.

For us, the changes to Messages alone make iOS 10 worth checking out.
