Apple's driving app that connects your iPhone to your car's infotainment system, CarPlay, has long frustrated users because it forces you to use Apple Maps.

For iPhone users who use Google Maps or Waze to navigate while driving, this was often a deal-breaker. One of Mashable's own editors switched to Android just so she could use Waze for her Los Angeles commute in her new car. She's not alone.

But at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference in San Jose on Monday, the new iOS 12 included a small-but-monumental change for a lot of drivers: support for third-party navigation apps.

Apple's Susan Prescott showed a demo of the new CarPlay app with three mapping app choices -- not just the usual icon for Apple Maps. Waze, Google Maps, and a popular Chinese mapping app were all available. Now users can use their preferred app while driving without having to ditch the iPhone.

The internet cheered and Android-based phone companies probably groaned that Apple now has given in to its users' greatest driving needs -- even if it means admitting its navigation app can't stand up to the competition.
