iOS 18: Rumors that it’s getting built-in ChatGPT are heating up
Rumors about Apple's plans to integrate ChatGPT into the the next big iOS update, iOS 18, are continuing to swirl.
As reported in Bloomberg's Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman said that Apple's AI efforts have lagged behind rivals, but a new partnership with OpenAI could change the game.
ChatGPT coming to iOS18?
Historically, Apple has focused on privacy and security, often processing AI tasks on-device rather than relying on cloud-based solutions. This approach has limited Siri's capabilities compared to competitors like OpenAI and Google's advanced AI models.

With iOS 18, Gurman said that Apple plans to introduce a mix of on-device and cloud-based AI features. Enhancements will include more conversational Siri interactions, improved auto-summarizing for notifications and news articles, better voice memo transcription, and AI-based photo editing. However, Gurman reports that Apple's generative AI technology is still not advanced enough to match the capabilities of leading chatbots like ChatGPT or Google's Gemini.
Apple is collaborating with OpenAI to bridge this gap by incorporating ChatGPT into iOS 18. This partnership aims to provide robust AI features while Apple continues to develop its own AI technology. The announcement of this collaboration is expected at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June.
