iPhone 12 Pro Max leak appears to confirm rumored features including 120hz display, LiDAR auto-focus

Some rumored features of the upcoming iPhone 12 Pro Max have now been all but confirmed, thanks to Front Page Tech host and reliable leaker Jon Prosser — including a 120hz display refresh rate and LiDAR.

To be clear, the model Prosser showed off in his video on Tuesday is not technically the iPhone consumers will get in their hands. This one is from a product validation test batch, used for the last round of testing before the phone goes into mass production. Though it's unlikely, features could potentially still change or be removed. Still, this model is incredibly close to being finalized, and about as near as we can get right now to the iPhone that will be on shelves.

Further, this is only a look at the iPhone 12 Pro Max, so we don't know whether the iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro will have the same features.

First up, this sneak peek confirms that the iPhone 12 Pro Max will likely have LiDAR assisted auto-focus, which measures distance using lasers. The phone will let you record video in 4K at 120 FPS, as well as slow motion 4K at 240FPS for those stunning bee videos and Jackass-style shenanigans.

Prosser also noted the enhanced night mode (which offers extended exposure times when the phone is on a steady surface), advanced noise reduction, and bit depth video support. Further, while he was unable to test it himself, Prosser's source told him the iPhone 12 Pro Max's facial recognition for Face ID is faster, and will work from more angles.

The leak further indicates that the iPhone 12 Pro Max's display settings will allow a 120hz screen refresh rate, as well as an option for the phone to automatically switch to 60hz depending upon what's being shown on the screen. However Prosser noted not all test phones have a 120hz refresh rate as an option, making it a bigger question as to whether this feature will actually end up in the finalized model.

Prosser even shared some video of the iPhone 12 Pro Max, though not much is actually visible due to its phone case designed to prevent leaks. Fortunately, Prosser's source got a better look at the phone's design.

According to the source, the iPhone 12 Pro Max's sides are flat, similar to the iPhone 5, but the edges of the display are slightly curved. The iPhone 12 Pro Max is also reportedly slightly lighter than the 11 Pro Max, despite the camera on the back being about 10 percent larger.

Not everything could be hidden by the iPhone's anti-leak case either. Prosser also showed off a notable notch at the top of the screen, which appears a bit smaller than it is due to the phone's 6.7-inch screen and thinner bezels. However, it seems we'll have to wait a bit longer to see the iPhone 12's design for ourselves.

Rumours and speculation about the iPhone 12 have been swirling for a while now, with supply chain issues delaying launch beyond Apple's usual September reveal. Apple is currently expected to stagger the launch, releasing two 6.1-inch models first before following them with 5.4-inch and 6.7-inch models at a later date.
