Latest iPhone 7 rumor suggests the headphone jack really is dead

But at least we’re getting a smart connector?

A new round of iPhone 7 leaks are out and, guess what, it seems like the headphone jack really will be gone.

The latest render of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus come from uSwitch in partnership with @OnLeaks (Steve Hemmerstoffer from Nowwhereelse.fr) – a leaker with a solid reputation.

The renders were sourced from some leaked blueprints and offer a few interesting details about the rumored design of the next iPhone.

First things first, the headphone jack is gone. This matches with the rumors we’ve been hearing for the past six months, and directly contradicts a report from last week that we at Mashable found suspect. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, there is too much smoke around the no-headphone jack rumor for me to believe that this isn’t going to happen. Start preparing yourselves now.

The dimensions for the phones themselves are very close to what we saw with the iPhone 6/6S and iPhone 6 Plus/6S Plus.

It also looks like the camera on the back of the iPhone 7 Plus (which may be reportedly dubbed the iPhone 7 Pro) will indeed be the dual-lens camera rumored for months. And that dual-lens camera will still have an unsightly bump. But at least now it’s going to offer better optics?

Maybe?

The most interesting part of these new rumored schematics is the inclusion of a Smart Connector on the back of the iPhone 7 Plus. Like both iPad Pro devices, the iPhone 7 Plus will reportedly have a Smart Connector that will allow for easy, magnetic connection to accessories such as keyboards or smart covers.

According to USwitch's source, the antenna lines will only be visible on the edge of the next iPhone, which should clean up the overall design.

Rumor season kicks up

It goes without saying that all of these rumors should still be taken with a grain of salt. Hemmerstoffer has a good track record with leaks for Android devices, his Apple work isn’t as strong. All told, what we’re really talking about is some CAD drawings that conform to a lot of the iPhone 7 rumors we’ve been hearing for the past few months.

And of course, the broader challenge is that even “reliable” rumor sources are starting to share conflicting information. Take the most recent note from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, which suggests that the iPhone 7 Plus (which will have the dual-lens camera) will be the only larger iPhone Apple offers.

That may seem to be obvious – Apple will only offer one 5.5-inch iPhone – except it contradicts one of Kuo’s earlier reports, which said Apple was looking at releasing two different larger-screened devices, one with a single lens camera and one with a dual-lens offering.

Now Kuo is saying there will only be one iPhone 7 Plus and it will have a dual-lens camera. My knee-jerk reaction to that news is, “Well, why would Apple release two separate iPhone 7 Plus devices?” It just doesn’t make sense.

Regardless of validity, we’re now in prime Apple rumor silly season.

I still stand by my predictions for the iPhone 7 (and the 2017 iPhone 7S):

  • It will be Apple’s fastest iPhone ever

  • It will have Apple’s most-advanced optics

  • There will be at least one extra feature you can’t get on any other iPhone.

  • It will come in rose gold.
