Apple is working on a new entry-level smartphone, DigiTimes reported Friday.

The device will be released early this summer, according to the report.

If this phone is anything like its predecessor, the iPhone SE, it'll be much less expensive and smaller than the rest of Apple's products. Released in 2016, the iPhone SE starts at $349 and is intended to meet the demand of customers who prefer a form factor closer to compact iPhones that preceded the iPhone 6/6 Plus.

The report predicts the "iPhone SE 2" will have a glass back for wireless charging but will not be enabled with the same 3D-sensing tech as on the iPhone X. Earlier this year, Tekz24 also predicted the upcoming model would have a glass back, from a "very reliable source."

Smartphones with wireless charging tend to have glass or plastic backs so as not to interfere with the electromagnetic fields needed for the tech to work.

Apple's iPhone SE generally does not follow the same annual cycle as the company's larger phones: Apple declined to update the phone in 2017, though it gave it a storage boost in March of that year.

The iPhone SE compares well to other phones of its size in resolution, design, speed, and storage. The iPhone SE 2's glass back could give millions of fans of compact phones their first experience with wireless charging.
