Apologising for the Harry Potter characters she's killed off is one of J.K. Rowling's Twitter traditions.

Every year, on the anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts, she says she's sorry for one character's death.

Last year Remus Lupin received an apology. The year before that, it was Fred Weasley.

This year, the tension began to mount early.

And just after midday, Rowling delivered in a big way.

Rowling has written at length about Snape -- arguably one of her most complex characters -- in the past. Back in 2015, she posted a series of tweets explaining exactly why Harry named one of his children after the man who hated him so much.

Like Harry, it seems that the wizarding world's most famous double-agent still holds a pretty big place in Rowling's heart.
