'Jane the Virgin' reveals Michael's fate. And it changes everything

Spoiler alert: This post contains plot details for the Season 3 premiere of Jane the Virgin.

When we last saw Jane the Virgin, our eponymous heroine (Gina Rodriguez) had just married the man of her dreams, Michael Cordero (Brett Dier) -- but before they could get to work on rendering the show's title obsolete, Michael was shot by crime boss Sin Rosetro (Bridget Regan) and left to bleed out in the hotel hallway.

Monday night's Season 3 premiere picked up moments later, with Michael in critical condition and in need of a risky surgical procedure that could either kill him or leave him crippled. But despite all the drama, by the end of the hour, Michael was alive and mostly well -- and definitely looking forward to getting the pet cat that Jane promised while he was unconscious.

The good news for #TeamMichael fans is that, according to showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman, "Michael was never going to die in the finale." But the shooting will create plenty of narrative repercussions for the rest of the season.

"The healing and recovery from such a traumatic event is something we continue to play through, and it has lasting ramifications for the character which you’ll start to see: when he can return to work; if he can return to work; how his life is changed as a result of this. It takes him into a new direction and there are some ongoing medical issues that we continue to grapple with," she previews.

Michael may be out of the woods for now, but that doesn't mean he's safe forever. The show's narrator may have foreshadowed an untimely demise for our heroic cop all the way back in episode 10 of Season 1, when Michael told Jane's mom, Xo (Andrea Navedo), that he would never stop believing that he and Jane were meant to be together.

To that, the narrator added, "And for as long as Michael lived, until he drew his very last breath … he never did. "

When asked if viewers should worry about Michael's safety in the future, given that ominous observation, Urman hedged, "You will have to watch the show. I will say it’s a reliable narrator and we’re going to be dealing with that."

While Michael's on the mend, his shooter is still on the loose -- or as loose as a person can be while in a submarine.

Episode 3 will shed more light on Rose's underwater jaunt with Luisa (Yara Martinez), now that the crime boss believes that she has eliminated Michael and any lingering suspicions against her.

"What I’m interested in Sin Rosetro, you’ll see this in 3, she got the money back, she tied up some loose ends and she really wants a relationship with Luisa," Urman says. "So can this love story between this villain and a slightly less stable -- but ultimately well-meaning -- woman work? I’m interested in taking it down from the crime a little bit."
