An engine fire onboard a Japan Airlines plane forced an emergency evacuation of passengers and crew at New Chitose Airport in Japan on Tuesday.

Four passengers were injured while evacuating the Boeing 737 via the aircraft's inflatable slides, according to rescue officials. There were 159 passengers and six crew on board.

The flight was headed to the runway and just about to take off when the airplane engine began sucking in swirling snow. When the pilot restarted the plane, there was an explosive sound and smoke began filling the cabin.

"A strange odor and smoke were detected inside the cabin,” a spokesperson for the airline said.

Three women in their 60s and 70s injured their necks and lower backs during evacuation. A 22-year-old man was also taken to the hospital as he felt unwell, according to local reports.

Passengers evacuated in about 20 minutes and then gathered on the snowy tarmac.

The canceled domestic flight was bound for Fukuoka in southern Japan.
