More than 50 airports across Japan were the scenes of major chaos Tuesday, when national airline carrier All Nippon Airways (ANA) experienced an outage on its check-in system for its flights.

According to Japan Times, the system went down at around 8:20 a.m. local time. The airline quickly posted a notice on its website apologising for delays and cancellations due to a "system malfunction."

The system glitch affected all airports with ANA flights, with Tokyo's Haneda International Airport -- its main domestic hub -- being hit the worst.

Although the system problem was resolved by around noon, ANA was still forced to cancel more than 120 domestic flights, leaving 16,000 passengers stranded across 50 airports. The airlines said the backlog caused Internet check-in, seat selection new reservations, changes to reservations and payments to not be available for domestic flights.

Four of the smaller airlines -- Starflyer, Airdo, Solaseed Air and Ibex Airlines -- using the same check-in system as ANA were also affected.

ANA is now investigating the cause of the system outage.
