Billionaire with first SpaceX moon tickets is holding a 'Bachelor' style contest to find his plus-one

Yusaku Maezawa is looking for love in some unusual places. The 44-year-old Japanese fashion entrepreneur has opened worldwide applications for the role of his "life partner," and to sweeten the offer he's packaged himself with a round trip to the literal Moon, courtesy of SpaceX. It seems having a net worth of $2 billion lets you make Frank Sinatra songs a little less metaphorical.

The founder of Japan's largest online clothing retailer Zozo, Maezawa made headlines in Sept. 2018 for buying SpaceX's first tourist ticket for a trip around the Moon. At the time, Maezawa said he'd be bringing six to eight artists on the 2023 flight to create art inspired by the journey. Now, he's put aside a seat on SpaceX's Starship for his future love.

"As feelings of loneliness and emptiness slowly begin to surge upon me, there's one thing that I think about: Continuing to love one woman," wrote Maezawa on his website/dating profile.

"I want to find a 'life partner.' With that future partner of mine, I want to shout our love and world peace from outer space."

Single women aged 20 and up can currently fill out an application form via Maezawa's website. No Japanese proficiency is needed — all that's required is that applicants have a "bright personality," "want to enjoy life to the fullest," and want "world peace," adding some pageant flair to the proceedings.

And, of course, they have to be interested in going to space.

The form also has sections for applicants to list their "hobbies", a "special skill" and any "selling points."

Maezawa's offer is likely to attract quite a few people more interested in an all-expenses paid trip around the Moon than in cherishing an eccentric Japanese billionaire for the rest of their lives. As such, narrowing down his prospective paramours is expected to take a few months.

Successful applicants will go on initial "matchmaking dates" with Maezawa in February, with March's "special dates" presumably only for the women he hits it off with. Maezawa expects to find his true love by the end of March, giving the pair three years to get to know each other before their 2023 couple's getaway to space.

The prospect of going to the Moon together may be a bit down the track, but it's nice to know that Maezawa is planning for the future. Besides, it'd probably be better for the couple to make sure they really get along before committing to the holiday. Like a first date on a yacht, a romantic trip to the Moon sounds magical until you realise you physically can't leave.

If Maezawa's search for a partner wasn't enough like an extremely high budget season of The Bachelor, Japanese video streaming website AbemaTV will also film the whole process to create an original documentary entitled Full Moon Lovers. Money can't buy you love, but it can buy you a film crew to chronicle the search.

Applications for the chance to be Maesawa's special someone close Jan. 16, 8 p.m. EST, so get on that quick if you think you might be the Selene to his Endymion. Just be prepared for the possibility of a villain edit if it doesn't pan out.
