Jasmin Paris becomes first woman to win the grueling 268-mile Montane Spine Race

She broke the course record by 12 hours. And that's including time the new mother spent at all but one checkpoint expressing breast milk. NBD.

Jasmin Paris, a British ultrarunner, just made history by completely smashing the course record for the Montane Spine Race. And she did it while continuing to express milk for her 14-month-old child.

With a time of 83 hours and 12 minutes, Paris not only became the first woman to ever win the race, but she set a new record, beating Eoin Keith — who previously held the best time if 95 hours and 17 minutes — by more than 12 hours.

The Montane Spine Race spans a grueling 268 miles through Pennine Way, and as inov-8 explained, is extra challenging because of extreme winter weather conditions, sleep deprivation, and gear-carrying the runners must endure. It's even referred to as "Britain’s Most Brutal" race.

The 35-year-old also gave birth to her daughter just 14 months prior to the race and is still breastfeeding, so she made sure to take time to stop at checkpoints and express breast milk.

“Although my milk production diminished throughout the race, I did express at four out of the five checkpoints," Paris told inov-8. "The first night was the hardest for me mentally because I was away from my daughter, but as the race went on it got easier as I got used to being away from her. It was brilliant to be reunited at the finish."

And though Paris had an impressive run, it wasn't without obstacles.

"It was really tough and dark for two-thirds of the time I was running. It was a completely different race than any race I’ve ever run before because it’s non-stop so you have the whole challenge of when do you sleep, and that becomes very tactical – and then you’re sleep deprived," she said.

In addition to being a mom and a new record holder, Paris works as a small animal vet and is currently writing a thesis. Talk about 2019 inspiration.
