At this point, it shouldn't be news to anyone that the film industry is failing female representation.

But just because it's old news doesn't mean it's not worth pointing out – and Jessica Chastain, for one, has had it with the "disturbing" portrayal of women in movies.

For the past two weeks, Chastain has been serving on the jury of the 70th annual Cannes Film Festival. During the closing awards ceremony this weekend, she took a few minutes to comment on the under-representation of female storytellers.

Here's a transcript of Chastain's comments, in case you haven't got the patience to watch the video:

I do believe that if you have female storytelling, you also have more authentic female characters. This is the first time I’ve watched 20 films in ten days. And I love movies. And the one thing I really took away from this experience is how the world views women, from the female characters that I saw represented.

And it was quite disturbing to me, to be honest. There are some exceptions, I will say. But for the most part, I was surprised with the representation of female characters onscreen in these films. And I do hope that when we include more female storytellers, we will have more of the women that I recognize in my day-to-day life. Ones that are proactive, have their own agency, don’t just react to the men around them. They have their own point of view.

This speech isn't the first time Chastain has called out the film industry on its B.S. Previously, she's spoken out about the gender pay gap in Hollywood and talked up her experience on the female-helmed movie set of The Zookeeper's Wife. And let's not forget her perfect eyeroll when asked recently about Johnny Depp.

Time will tell whether Cannes (or the the industry in general) heeds Chastain's call for better portrayals of female characters. But this year, at least, the festival ended with a big win by a woman: Sofia Coppola became only the second female filmmaker ever to take home the best director prize, for The Beguiled.

Meanwhile, Chastain wasn't the only Cannes juror to advocate for more inclusive cinema. According to Indiewire, Chinese actress Fan Bingbing also chimed in saying she wanted to "encourage female filmmakers." Will Smith added, "A couple black folks won’t hurt next year either."

In other words, Cannes, you've got some work to do.
