BEVERLY HILLS, California -- Jimmy Fallon has been tapped to host the 74th Annual Golden Globes.

“We’ve found the best possible host to make the evening really memorable and that’s Jimmy Fallon,” NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt said at the network's Television Critics Association presentation Tuesday.

The Tonight Show host tweeted his excitement after the news was announced Tuesday.

The awards show, produced by Dick Clark Productions in association with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, has become known as the unofficial kick-off to awards season.

The 2016 telecast averaged 18.5 million viewers overall in “live plus same day” ratings, according to Nielsen Media Research.

Previously, the Golden Globes were hosted by comedian Ricky Gervais and popular duo Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

But Fallon is no stranger to big hosting gigs.

In 2010, he tackled the 62nd Annual Emmy Awards, where he opened with a Glee and Bruce Springsteen inspired musical number.

“Jimmy Fallon’s brand of comedy will continue the tradition of cutting-edge excitement viewers have come to expect from the host of the Golden Globes,” Allen Shapiro, CEO of Dick Clark Productions, said in a statement.

This year, The Tonight Show is nominated for two Emmys, including Outstanding Variety Series Talk.

Fallon, a Saturday Night Live alum, has become a dominant force in the late night world, thanks in large part to his digital presence. The show is the most subscribed and viewed late-night channel on YouTube, racking up 11 million subscribers and more than 5.6 billion video views.

The three-hour Golden Globes show will air Sunday Jan. 8, 2017 from 8 p.m to 11 p.m. ET (5 p.m to 8p.m. PT).
