Miami Marlins player José Fernández, 24 -- one of the league's most dominant pitchers -- died in a boat crash near Miami Beach on Sunday. He was one of three reported fatalities, though a search continues for a possible fourth victim.

The Marlins organization announced the cancellation of Sunday's game against the Atlanta Braves and issued a statement shortly after the news emerged.

"The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic lose of José Fernández. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time."

The overturned boat was discovered in the early hours of Sunday morning on a jetty near one of the Port of Miami's major shipping lanes. The 32-foot boat Fernández was on had a "severe impact" with the jetty, according to the Associated Press.

Fernández was a first-round draft selection for the Marlins in 2011. Born in Cuba, the young pitcher finally came to the United States after three unsuccessful attempts to defect.

He made his Major League Baseball debut in 2013, going on to play in that year's MLB All-Star Game. After the season, he won the NL Rookie of the Year Award and placed third in Cy Young Award balloting.

The death is all the more tragic coming five days after Fernández announced to the world that he was going to be a father in a heartfelt Instagram post.

This story is still developing. Expect to learn more after a Sunday morning news conference in Miami.
