It was all going so well for Justin Trudeau's socks. Just as he gains the recognition he deserves as the ultimate socks symbol, he's gone and been upstaged by none other than Ireland's prime minister.

During a press conference with Justin Trudeau at Farmleigh House, Dublin, Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar sported a rather fetching pair of novelty socks peppered with mounties and maple leaves. I see what you did there, Varadkar.

While it's clear Varadkar chose to extend the err...foot of friendship through his sock choice, it doesn't quite appear that Trudeau went to the same trouble.

Trudeau was spotted wearing a pair of stripy socks, which -- granted -- did match his suit. But, is that really good enough?

Varadkar, the newly-crowned King of Socks, was keen to show off his delightful socks, as he presented Trudeau with a pair of Irish socks and an Ireland rugby shirt. A subtle hint to step up your game, Trudeau?
