Justin Trudeau may be, as some have theorized, an elaborate high-level project by Canada to troll the U.S. Or he may be a science project, created in a lab by scientists to seek the most polymath world leader possible.

But the man has style.

Trudeau's chic taste in socks has once again grabbed international attention. Reuters photographer Gary Cameron snapped a close-up of Trudeau's multicolored skull-and-crossbones socks, which he wore to a U.S. Chamber of Commerce meeting on Thursday.

It's not the first time Trudeau has rocked a cool sock. From argyle to maple leaves, Trudeau -- once a nightclub bouncer -- shows off his creative flair.

A brief history of great socks

Trudeau started off his sock tour modestly with UK prime minister David Cameron. A dark pair of socks draw no attention.

Back at home, he started stepping up his style at the Throne Speech with a cheerful striped pair that linked his dark blue suit with his brown shoes.

Trudeau wore socks festooned with the logo of the Montreal Canadiens hockey team -- cheekily, while accepting a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey.

Skulls are one of Trudeau's go-to themes. Not only did he wear them in the meeting with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, he selected another pair of skull socks at another prominent event. In Davos this year, Trudeau wore burgundy socks with little green skulls on them, bringing a witty fashion moment to the frequently pompous discussion at the Swiss resort.

Even the CEO of Xerox mentioned Trudeau's socks earlier this month, though we can't find any record of what she actually said.

For a visit with Obama, Trudeau went conservative with argyle.

Naturally he has a patriotic pair.

While we like fun, there is more than just cuteness to these sock choices. They signal belonging. Socks are a strong corporate power move of late, "a secret handshake that show you've arrived," per a New York Times article a few years back. Silicon Valley has long favored colorful socks as a way of demonstrating rebellion against corporate control. Now Ottawa is as well.
