Nobel Prize stolen from social activist Kailash Satyarthi's house
It's history repeating for India. And not in a good way.
In an unfortunate turn of events, Indian Nobel Laureate Kailash Satyarthi's house in Delhi was burgled and his coveted Nobel Prize citation stolen.
Back in 2004, India's first (also Asia's first) Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore's prized citation was stolen from a museum in his famed abode of Shantiniketan, 102 miles from Kolkata. The prime suspect in the theft was reportedly arrested only last year.
But since Satyarthi had dedicated his award to the nation, the Nobel medal is safely housed in the Rashtrapati Bhavan (official residence of the Indian President).
According to the local police, the theft was discovered by his staff on Tuesday morning. The 63-year-old social activist is reportedly away to attend the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates in the US.
Satyarthi is a deeply respected figure in India and across the world. He founded the Bachpan Bachao Andolan (Save Childhood Movement), an organization dedicated to ending child labor and rescuing underage workers.
He was honored by the Swedish Academy in 2014 with the Nobel Peace Prize for his "struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education."
