After the Rio de Janeiro athlete’s village was criticised as “unliveable” the Australian Olympic Committee, the city’s major has taken a decidedly piss-taking route by cracking a kangaroo joke.

Eduardo Paes told a Brazilian news outlet “I almost feel like putting a kangaroo in front of their building to make them feel at home.” A hilarious way to discharge reports of blocked toilets, exposed wiring, leaking water and the distinct smell of gas, if ever there was one.

While other nation’s teams have only found minor problems with the plumbing and electrical set-up at the athlete’s village, head of the Australian delegation Kitty Chiller was less chill than her name suggests. On Sunday night, she confirmed no Australian athletes would be moving into the buildings, which is being viewed as a health and safety concern.

Paes responded by saying adjustments would be made. “As hosts, what we want is for everyone to feel at home ... It is natural that you have some kind of adjustments to do, but we will make Australians feel at home here,” he said.

Responding to the mayor’s kangaroo “joke”, Australian Olympic Committee spokesman Mike Tancred said (presumably through gritted teeth) “We do not need kangaroos, we need plumbers to account for the many puddles found in the apartments.”

If only installing animals into disagreeable situations magical improved them. That’s a world we want to live in. #KangarooGate
