TBH, Katy Perry had some terrible jokes at the VMAs

Yikes.

"Even in the apocalypse, we deserve a great soundtrack," Katy Perry said during her opening monologue of the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards—but apparently, we don't deserve good jokes.

Many of the singer's opening remarks fell flat with fans watching at home, and they took to Twitter to blast the singer for her lack of comedic chops.

Perry awkwardly landed on stage and, despite fumbling a bit with her mask, that was smoothest portion of her introduction. Her whole bit was about how she had been away from Earth and was just now catching up with what's going on. Ha ha.

Because there's an incredible amount of depressing news out in the world right now, it would be awkward for her not to address it—but instead of tackling it head-on, Perry joked about how much she loved the pilgrim chic outfits from The Handmaid's Tale and a fake headline of the world burning.

Oh, and she looped in a fidget spinner, because is it even 2017 if someone doesn't play with a fidget spinner on live television?

The jokes unfortunately didn't land for people watching and live-tweeting.

Better luck next time!
