Film director, podcast kingpin, and hockey jersey afficianado Kevin Smith is recovering after a "massive heart attack" on Sunday night.

He broke the news to the internet with a tweet from his hospital bed.

Smith, 47, was in Glendale, recording "Kevin Smith Live!," reportedly a televised comedy special. According to Smith's posts, he suffered the heart attack after completing the first of two scheduled shows. He shared a more detailed account on Facebook.

One of the more famous directors to come out of the indie film explosion of the 1990s with hits like Clerks and Chasing Amy, Smith has always been open about his weight issues which culminated in a dramatic 85-pound weight loss a few years ago.

Smith has credited both the documentary Fed Up and a 2010 incident in which he was removed from a Southwest Airlines flight for, allegedly, being too big, for helping spur his lifestyle change.

Smith boycotted Southwest, despite his subsequent weight loss, for several years until he took a flight in 2016.

Smith's more recent films, including Tusk (2014) and Yoga Hosers (2016), haven't received the same critical acclaim as his earlier films but he still maintains a level of popularity, especially with a base of dedicated fans who have followed him since Clerks' breakout success.

He's also kept busy with TV work, including DC properties like Supergirl and The Flash, which isn't a surprise to anyone who knows Smith's affinity for comics (which has also been a steady supplier of work for Smith as a writer for series like Daredevil and Green Arrow).

But Smith has also spent the last 10-plus years overseeing his sprawling SModcast podcast network, founded with producer/pal Scott Mosier. Smith appears on half a dozen shows while the network produces an additional number of shows on a wide range of topics.

Considering the severity of the heart attack, it's good to see Smith in relatively high spirits and, much like he's always done, sharing the details of his life from his own unique perspective.
