10-year-old girl moves birthday party to nursing home to celebrate with her grandma
When 10-year-old Ellie realized that her grandmother Rita wouldn't be able to attend her birthday party due to health concerns, she considered canceling it all together. But her mother Kimber (who asked Mashable to omit her last name) came up with a better solution: bring the party to granny's nursing home.
In December, Kimber and Ellie brought their family and friends to the Tennessee nursing home to surprise Rita with an invite to the little girl's Alice in Wonderland-themed party, ABC News reports.
Initially Kimber says Rita was confused by the invite, but was touched when she realized the party's location had moved.
"She was overcome with emotion," Kimber wrote in an email.
Before Kimber decided to move the party to her mother's nursing home, she says Ellie had a difficult time coping with the knowledge that her grandmother would be absent from their celebration. The pair are close, and Rita's recent move to a nursing home has been hard on Ellie.
After Ellie burst into tears one day while thinking of her upcoming party, Kimber knew she had to do something to soothe her daughter. She says that though the resulting party had a small turnout, the children who attended had a blast.
"This child just has a heart that amazes me," she said.
