Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda will reprise his iconic role. In 2019, Miranda will return to the award-winning musical in the title role when it opens in San Juan, Puerto Rico, according to Playbill.

Miranda is loud and proud of his Puerto Rican heritage, and of the diverse, color-blind Hamilton cast as it reflects his American upbringing. His last performance as Alexander Hamilton was in July 2016.

“Bringing [Hamilton] to Puerto Rico is a dream that I’ve had since we first opened at The Public Theater in 2015,” Miranda said in a statement through Playbill. “When I last visited the island, a few weeks before Hurricane Maria, I had made a commitment to not only bring the show to Puerto Rico, but also return again to the title role. In the aftermath of Maria we decided to expedite the announcement of the project to send a bold message that Puerto Rico will recover and be back in business, stronger than ever.”

Miranda has been active in Hurricane Maria relief efforts, using his social media following to raise money for the Hispanic Federation and reminding the public that Puerto Rico needs help, even when the news cycle moves on.

According to Playbill, Hamilton will run at the University of Puerto Rico's Teatro UPR from Jan. 8-27, 2019. The theater was damaged in Hurricane Maria but will be repaired and restored for the performances.
