The Onion is going to the movies with new Lionsgate deal
Satirical news brand The Onion is partnering with Lionsgate to make three films over the next two years.
Onion Studios, the in-house film and TV development department of the media company that brings you online humor and plenty of wasted time at The Onion and ClickHole sites, announced the partnership Monday with production company Serious Business.
Together the companies plan to team up with creators and executive producers from Comedy Central's late-night show @midnight with Chris Hardwick to create original projects -- but no word yet on what those three films will look like.
In a witty and typically irreverent statement, Onion Studio's vice president Kyle Ryan said, "We've plotted our takeover of the film industry for some time. With the help of Serious Business and Lionsgate, we'll make room on our award shelf for some Oscars. To the basement you go, Pulitzers."
One of the tapped producers tweeted in the style of an Onion article about the deal.

Lionsgate will manage distribution of the films through 2018 and help with promotion.
The Onion was purchased by Univision last year.
