You might not expect Macklemore to be at the centre of a political tussle, but then again, it is Australia.

The pop star has been at the centre of criticism from "angry old white dudes" due to his planned performance of "Same Love" at the National Rugby League grand final on Saturday.

"Footy fans shouldn't be subjected to a politicised grand final. Sport is sport!" Australia's former prime minister, Tony Abbott, tweeted on Wednesday. There was a petition against the "LGBTIQ anthem," and a raft of conservatives riling up against the 2013 track.

Well, Macklemore can probably thank those haters, because "Same Love" has shot up to #1 on the Australian iTunes charts.

Of course, "Same Love" touches on the topic of same-sex marriage, which Australia is currently having its say on through a postal vote.

On the news of the unexpected rise of 2013 to the top of the charts, Macklemore tweeted on Friday, "Love is winning."

And yep, it seems like the whole nation is tuning into "Same Love" once again.

Australia, you did it.
