'The Mandalorian' has reportedly dropped Gina Carano after her 'abhorrent' social media posts
It looks as though The Mandalorian is cleaning house.
Actor Gina Carano has reportedly been released from her role on The Mandalorian as former Rebel shock trooper Cara Dune following significant criticism regarding her social media posts. She has also parted ways with her agency UTA, according to a report from Deadline.
In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, a Lucasfilm spokesperson revealed that "Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future."
"Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable," they continued.
The Mandalorian's executive producer Jon Favreau originally created the character of Cara Dune specifically for Carano.
Carano has repeatedly come under fire for her dangerous and discriminatory views, even causing the hashtags #FireGinaCarano and #GinaCaranoIsOverParty to trend on Twitter. She most recently became the subject of backlash after sharing a post to her Instagram story this week which appeared to liken being a Republican to being a Jew during the Holocaust. However, Carano had also previously come to strife for sharing dangerous anti-mask rhetoric, urging churches and businesses to reopen amidst the coronavirus pandemic, perpetuating the false narrative of U.S. election voter fraud, and appearing to mock transgender people.
For the record, the actor stated that her decision to add "beep/bop/boop" to her Twitter profile in place of pronouns wasn't intended to mock trans people. Instead, Carano claimed it was designed to "[expose] the bullying mentality of the mob that has taken over the voices of many genuine causes."
Of course, her alleged good intentions would be easier to believe if Carano acknowledged the actual harm she supposedly inadvertently caused, and apologised once made aware.
