Margot Robbie had never heard of Tonya Harding before 'I, Tonya'

Tonya Harding had probably never heard of Margot Robbie either.

Margot Robbie offers a new take on Tonya Harding in the new film I, Tonya, but the Australian actress had never heard of the real-life person she's now playing.

"I never heard of the incident. I never heard any of their names," Robbie told The Huffington Post. "[It was] just written like it was meant to be a mockumentary style. Then I found out it was a true story — completely true ― and I was shocked and enthralled by that."

Robbie has previously admitted that she thought I, Tonya was a made-up story, but as the film draws audience and awards buzz it becomes more baffling to imagine not having even heard Harding's name at some point.

As HuffPo notes, Robbie was three when Olympic skater Nancy Kerrigan sustained brutal injuries from an orchestrated attack that implicated Harding. American millennials have heard about the scandal because both skaters were on the U.S. Olympic team, but Robbie could easily have skated through life not knowing (ha).

I, Tonya is now in theaters.
