In an epic teaser for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, the prime minister of Japan arrived at the Rio Games through a green pipe dressed as Mario.

If that doesn't get you excited for the upcoming Games, nothing will. In that one perfect moment, Shinzo Abe became everyone's hero.

Mario was joined by Pac-Man and anime figures, such as Doraemon, in the clip that takes us on a journey from the streets of Tokyo down a tunnel to the Maracana stadium in Brazil, Rio.

The character of Mario is a globally-recognized Japanese game icon. He was developed by Nintendo's Japanese video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, originally for Donkey Kong, but became even more famous thanks to the hugely-successful Super Mario Bros series.

The appearance of Abe as Mario, holding a red ball, occurred during the part of the ceremony which offers a preview to the next Olympics host city. The segment continued with a dizzying cityscape, flying robots and some solid dance moves.

When his country won the bid for the Olympics in 2013, Abe excitedly said: "I am so happy, I am overjoyed ... The joy was even greater than when I won my own election."
