After decades of fan speculation, Nintendo has finally settled the debate on whether Toad's mushroom-shaped head is actually a part of his head or a hat.

According to Super Mario Odyssey producer Yoshiaki Koizumi, Toad's mushroom head is in fact his head, and not some sort of hat that every single Toad decides to wear all of the time. The groundbreaking fact was revealed in a short interview with the developer released on Monday.

The debate about what exactly is going on with Toad's head has been ongoing since Toad first appeared in 1985's Super Mario Bros. for the NES. With the recent release of Super Mario Odyssey, the debate ignited, prompting people to do some in-depth research on Toad's head and sparking a lot of online arguments.

Some fans are glad to know the reality of Toad's anatomy, but many people aren't so hot on the idea of Toad's mushroomy head being a part of his actual body, especially considering a Mario cartoon from the '80s imagined the mushroom cap as a hat.

Of course, if we apply that hat logic to Toad's body, the consequences would be... disturbing.

Koizumi also answered questions about other things pertaining to the Mario universe and Super Mario Odyssey, including why they included nipples on Mario but not a belly button (he didn't give a very satisfying answer).
