Australia just voted in favour of legalising same-sex marriage, by a mile.

Following a non-binding, non-compulsory nationwide postal survey on the matter and a lengthy campaign from both the "Yes" and "No" camps, 61.6 percent of eligible Australians voted in favour of legalising same-sex marriage.

Australians gathered in parks, pubs and huddled on their couches awaiting the news, delivered by the Australian Bureau of Statistics on Wednesday.

Here's the moment when Sydney found out, at an event in Surry Hills' Prince Alfred Park.

Melbourne folks gathered outside the State Library of Victoria to hear the news, letting off rainbow coloured smoke when the result was heard.

Locals in Adelaide donned plastic ponchos and umbrellas to hear the announcement under a light downpour.

The fight for marriage equality's not over yet, with the Australian government set to take an official vote before the end of the year.

Here's hoping we'll be publishing another round of announcements like these before 2017's out.
