The sloppy mess of gravy and pastry that is the Australian meat pie is the kind of thing one eats after they've had a few drinks, or when they're utterly desperate.

But Canberra teenager Ryan Kennedy is so obsessed with the foodstuff its almost poetic. But tragedy struck recently, when he made a bet with his cricket teammates that if he didn't score more than 50 runs in a match, he'd have to give his "greatest love" up for good.

The 14-year-old lost the bet. That's why he created a Change.org petition, writing that if he received more than 250 signatures, then he'd be allowed to eat his beloved meat pies again.

"Words can't explain how disappointed I am with myself for doing it," Kennedy wrote of the bet in the petition.

The highschooler told 7 News that he'd typically eat two to three pies a week, but regretted making the bet as he had "never made a 50 before." If he won the bet, his friends would've bought him two pies each.

"It was a fun thing to do that ended up badly ... My life's gone. My greatest love. I'm absolutely gutted," he told the news outlet.

The best part of it all is the comments in support of Kennedy on the petition.

"Ryan is one of the sickest lads around, and the fact that he won't be able to eat meat pies again scares me to no end," reads one comment.

Another comment reads: "Mate, I feel your pain. I love pies too. Go for your dreams."

And lo and behold, the petition received more than 500 signatures at the time of writing, meaning he can eat all the pies again. He can and he definitely will.

Kennedy told the Daily Mail that he's "stoked" about the result, although we're yet to see Kennedy gorge on a meat pie just yet.

Go ahead, mate. Do it for Australia.
