In the opening moments of her new track "NO," Meghan Trainor lets us think that we may be in for another syrupy sweet, doo-wop-inspired hit.

"I think it's so cute, and I think it's so sweet how you let your friends convince you to try and talk to me," she says in deceptively cute coo. "But let me stop you there before you speak."

That's when she leaves the cuteness behind and moves full steam ahead into a fierce pop track that serves as Rejecting A Male Suitor 101. It's a song that could just have easily found its home on an early Britney Spears album. "My name is no / My sign is no / My number's no," she says, more shouting the word than singing it.

Talking to Billboard, Trainor said that she and producer Ricky Reed crafted this song on the fly, after her album was already done. The inspiration: When Trainor told LA Reid her followup to Title was ready to go, the Epic Records CEO replied that it actually wasn't, because Trainor "[didn't] have a single."

"I was pissed off. And I said, 'All right Mr. Reid, I'm going to write you a single right now," she said. "And I went to the studio and said, 'I need a big, angry anthem' and it turned into an awesome woman anthem about being independent."

The Grammy Best New Artist winner says that her entire sophomore album will mark a major departure for her.

"When you first listen to [the album], you might go, 'Whoa, who is this?'" she told Billboard. "Then you hear my quirky lyrics and throwback melodies, and it sounds like Meghan Trainor sounds."
