Meitu's latest smartphone is for the selfie-obsessed
By now, you would've heard of Meitu -- the top Chinese beautifying app that's taking the world by storm.
The Chinese app maker is also capitalising on the selfie-obsessed with its range of "selfie phones."
Its latest model, the T8, was just announced on Tuesday, and has placed fast autofocus 12 megapixel cameras on both front and back.
The cameras use a dual pixel Sony IMX362 sensor -- the same sensor used for the rear camera of the Xiaomi Redmi Pro 2.
Dual pixel cameras are touted to provide much faster autofocus, as well as clearer low-light pictures.
The phone's built in beautifying software will also bring some form of artificial intelligence to the table, the company claims.
The AI will apply Meitu's facial recognition tech across its vast database of selfies, in order to guess the age, gender and skin tones of the individual, so it can make a better guess at how to auto-tweak your looks.
This means it'll apply different effects to women, men and children, the company says.
A Meitu spokesperson said that the AI function is unique to the phone for now, and isn't found in Meitu's apps.
"We can’t say for sure right now whether the gender and age detection will be available on our apps in the future," she said.
Despite its strong selfie prowess, the phone itself is fairly average, specs-wise.
The T8 uses a MediaTek 2.3GHz ten-core processor, and a modified OS based on Android Marshmallow. In comparison, fellow Chinese maker Oppo R9 has an eight-core 2GHz processor, and Huawei Mate 8 has a eight-core 2.3GHZ processor.
Meitu debuted its first phone in 2013, and has launched new models every year since.
