Mercedes re-thinks electric cars with an 'SNL' twist -- and 9,000 batteries

It's not cost-effective and won't save you any time, but at least it's saving the planet?

Electric cars may be the future, but they're more expensive than their gas-guzzling counterparts and tougher to recharge (for now).

Enter the Mercedes-Benz AA Class, an all-new vision for electric driving -- compliments of Saturday Night Live -- that skips far-flung charging stations and wait times in favor of replaceable batteres. AA batteries. 9,648 of them, to be exact.

Swapping that many batteries in and out may not be cost-effective or time-saving, but at least it's a process that everyone can understand. Anyone who's old enough to drive a car at this point can still remember a time before rechargeable batteries were used in everything, right?

There's also a sweet "ribbon release auto-dump" feature that makes it easy to jettison the full load of batteries when it's time for replacements.
