Mercedes' new G-Wagen is so rugged, it has a wood floor

Sometimes you just want a Mercedes you can mistreat in the mud.

The boxy Mercedes-Benz G-Class -- known around the world as the G-Wagen -- is the chariot of choice for well-heeled SUV buyers.

There's good reason for that: the four-wheel drive luxury truck starts just shy of $120,000 -- at least here in the U.S. As such, it's rare to see one being knocked around in the dirt.

Seeing a space for a tougher more back-to-the-basics version of its former military truck, Mercedes has created the G 350 d Professional, a less luxurious but more butch version of the G-Wagen. And, as you can see in the provided photos, it looks like it enjoys a good off-road excursion now and again.

Underneath its squared-off hood is a diesel-burning V6 engine that produces 245 horsepower. The engine's power is routed to all four wheels through a 7-speed automatic.

If you have to ask about 0 to 60 mph times and top speed, you are missing the point of this truck. The G 350 d Professional is about how far you can get into the desert, not how quickly you can accelerate on the freeway.

In making the interior more utilitarian, Mercedes designers took the standard G-Class cabin and simply removed stuff -- such as the tablet-like infotainment screen -- and then added some rough-and-tumble trim, including rubber floor mats and a hardwood deck in the rear. I don't know about you, but I wish more -- if not all -- SUVs offered wood flooring. Très chic.

Intriguingly, just because the dash has a smaller screen than standard doesn't mean it's not still tech-inclusive. For instance, Mercedes still offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.

Finishing off the go-anywhere motif, Mercedes includes running boards, mud flaps, headlight grilles, a rear ladder and optional roof rack.

Now, for as sweet as this thing is, there is a downside: It's not going to be sold in the U.S. Apparently, Mercedes doesn't think the Kardashians would actually want this over, say, the gasoline V8-powered version.

Personally, I think that's insane. That said, I can't say I'd step up and buy one myself, as it's still way outside my price range. Either way, it's nice to know such a thing exists somewhere.
