Television is nothing if not an inexhaustible learning tool, right? Following Saturday Night Live's perfume parody "Complicit," starring Scarlett Johansson as Ivanka Trump, many viewers took to the internet to find out what exactly that mysterious word meant.

Dictionary source Mirriam-Webster tweeted on Monday that "complicit" had spiked in online searches, and they were quick to identify the source:

According to the Mirriam-Webster site, "complicit" derives from "complicity," or "association or participation in or as if in a wrongful act." Over time it evolved into the slightly shortened version we use now in political conversations and live, televised skits.

Complicity has been in use since at least the middle of the 17th century, when Thomas Blount defined the word memorably (and succinctly) as “a consenting or partnership in evil.” Complicit is considerably more recent, with our earliest evidence currently coming from the middle of the 19th century.
