Trump's last-minute Mexican sojourn just gets curiouser and curiouser.

The Republican candidate ditched his press corps in Arizona and jetted into the country unexpectedly Wednesday -- amid criticism from its political leaders and protests from its residents -- to give a speech praising a nation he recently said was responsible for drugs, crime and rapists in the United States.

Trump's volte-face is confusing enough, but it was the topic of "the wall" that left onlookers really confounded -- you know, the wall that Mexico is definitely paying for, as Trump has promised umpteen times before.

Trump said the topic of who would pay for the wall didn't come up during his meeting with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto.

Peña Nieto, however, told a different story.

He tweeted shortly after their friendly chat, saying: "At the start of the conversation with Donald Trump I made it clear Mexico would not pay for the wall."

"What the President said is that Mexico, as he has said on several occasions ... will not pay for that wall," spokesman Eduardo Sanchez told reporters.

Clinton was quick to react to the confusion.

Trump has yet to clarify personally, but his campaign issued a short statement saying that Wednesday's meeting was "not a negotiation."

That wall is not going pay for itself, but right now nobody seems keen to pony up the cash. However, Trump still believes Mexico will pay for the wall -- even if Mexico doesn't know it yet.
