'Moulin Rouge!' stage musical in development
Something spectacular, spectacular is coming to Broadway.
Baz Luhrmann's 2001 cult favorite musical movie Moulin Rouge! is currently being developed for the stage, a move which probably won't surprise any fans of the film.
A story of star-crossed lovers in Paris at the turn of the 20th century, Moulin Rouge! tells the story of bohemian artists and courtesans via re-tooled classic rock music by the likes of David Bowie and Nirvana.

This quintessential Luhrmann movie is being adapted by writer John Logan (Skyfall, Gladiator) and director Alex Timbers (Peter and the Starcatcher, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson). Timbers is an auteur in the same vein as Luhrmann, though instead of strobe lights and jump cuts he prefers gritty yet still fantastical staging that could bring a new dimension to the beloved story.
In a statement to Variety, Luhrmann praised Timbers' "creative spirit," and added, "It’s immensely gratifying to know that a new wave of artists will be leading Moulin Rouge! into its rightful theatrical realm."
Production date, cast, and the venue have not been announced.
