Airstrikes in the contested Syrian city of Aleppo have struck a hospital and nearby buildings, killing at least 14 patients and doctors, the charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) told Mashable.

The well-known field hospital was supported by MSF and located in the rebel-held district of al-Sukkari in Aleppo, the charity says. Among the dead was one of the few pediatricians left in the city.

The chief Syrian opposition negotiator Mohammed Alloush blamed the government of President Bashar Assad for the deadly airstrikes on Aleppo.

MSF said the hospital was the main referral centre for paediatrics and had eight doctors and 28 nurses. It featured an ER, an OPD (Operating department practitioners), intensive care unit and an operating theatre - all now destroyed.

The Syrian Coalition released a video of the aftermath of the strike saying that the death toll could rise significantly, with 28 people still unaccounted for.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 20 were killed, and that the hospital was completely destroyed, The Associated Press reported.

The Syrian Civil Defense, a volunteer first-responders agency, said more than 25 people were killed in the Aleppo strikes and there were still victims buried under the rubble.

Alloush told The Associated Press that the latest violence by government forces shows "the environment is not conducive to any political action."

The Associated Press contributed reporting.
