First reactions to Disney's live-action 'Mulan': Stunning, sexy, and you won't miss the songs

First reactions to Mulan are in, with early audiences declaring it a gorgeous film that's so good the songs aren't even missed.

The latest live-action adaptation of a Disney classic, Mulan follows Hua Mulan (Yifei Liu) as she disguises herself as a man to join the Imperial Chinese Army. After the Emperor of China (Jet Li) conscripts one man from each family to face Bori Khan's (Jason Scott Lee) invading Hun army, Mulan secretly takes her ailing father's place.

Many fans were initially apprehensive to hear the live-action Mulan would make significant changes to the original 1998 cartoon, and draw more from the original Chinese ballad. Such changes included forgoing the cartoon's iconic musical numbers and removing comic relief Mushu. Further, the character of bisexual icon Li Shang was split into two roles: Commander Tung (Donnie Yen) and Chen Honghui (Yoson An).

Fortunately, the alterations appear to have paid off. The overwhelming majority of first reactions have been glowing, with many praising Mulan as a visually spectacular tale that stands on its own.

Mulan marches into U.S. theatres on Mar. 27.
