The revival of popular 1990s sitcom Murphy Brown has kicked off filming and we're beginning to learn more about the topical nature of the show, including plans to directly address the #MeToo movement and plenty about Donald Trump's attacks on the press.

Speaking at the Television Critics Association summer press tour Sunday morning in Los Angeles, creator Dianne English confirmed that President Trump and his continued attacks on the press would be a big topic of the upcoming series.

Per the Hollywood Reporter, English said, "Our show has always been in the real world, but I'm focusing the show through the prism of the press. The First Amendment is under attack like we've never seen it before."

Candice Bergen, reprising her role as the titular character, echoed these sentiments, saying, “The news now, thanks to our president, is in constant turmoil. I think it will be reassuring to see Murphy sticking up for the press and sticking up to the president.”

The comments came as Trump was busy reprising his attacks on the press in another trademark early morning Twitter tirade, even as his daughter Ivanka, current spokesperson Kellyanne Conway, and former spokesperson Anthony Scaramucci have all distanced themselves from the line.

Meanwhile, Trump isn't the only ongoing news story that will make its way into the series. English confirmed, according to Entertainment Weekly, that the fourth episode of the revival is titled "#MurphyToo," and, yes, that's a reference to the #MeToo movement. "It’s a powerful moment and we wanted to do it justice," English said.

While the show's shooting schedule means lots of topical jokes won't make the cut, ongoing themes of the Trump Era will. Immigration (specifically DACA) and Fox News will be part of the upcoming new season as Murphy's son will be the only liberal voice on the show's Fox News proxy, Wolf News.

In other words, the show won't be pulling any punches, just like in its original run. And that means it's only a matter of time before Trump tweets about it.

Fantastic.
