Immortals take third in the 'League of Legends' NALCS Summer Playoffs

TORONTO -- Immortals bested Counter Logic Gaming (CLG) in a battle for third place in the North American League of Legends Championship Series Summer Playoffs, earning them the top seed in the 2016 World Championships qualifiers.

CLG and Immortals went head-to-head in a best-of-five series Saturday at the Air Canada Center in Toronto, where Immortals paved the way to a 3-2 victory. CLG will have to bank on Team SoloMid winning the finals Sunday to make it to the World Championships or else they'll have to place through the qualifiers.

CLG's Huhi grabs an aggressive first blood

To get the match started, CLG's mid laner Huhi went aggressive, stunning Immortals' Pobelter near the turret and going in for a fast kill. Huhi's play set the stage, as the next two kills rolled in for CLG within just a couple minutes.

CLG takes a big lead with a 4-1 team fight

While advancing on the bottom lane, CLG was met with a tough defense from Immortals, but it wasn't enough. Huni was taken down quickly and CLG pushed hard, forcing Immortals back to their third turret.

CLG didn't let up, taking three more kills and sending the fifth member of Immortals running back to the fountain to tend to his wounds. CLG lost only one teammate, setting them up for an unstoppable offense.

CLG crushes Immortals after Immortals crushes the drake

Immortals went in for a drake kill to get some much needed experience, gold and buffs, and they succeeded. CLG was coming for them regardless, pushing headlong into Immortals and tearing them down so badly they couldn't hope to come back, earning CLG an ace and leading to their eventual victory, making the score 1-0 CLG.

Huni barely avoids death in a great escape

Immortals' Huni and CLG's Darshan were going at it in the top lane until Darshan got an advantage and Huni went on the run. Using a pro Flash, Huni blinked away at just the right moment to get far from the aggressive Darshan. It worked and Huni teleported to safety with a sliver of health left.

CLG saves Darshan and takes a turret

The tables turned in the top lane and Darshan was on the run from Immortals' Huni and Reignover, but CLG was there to save him. Xmithie went after Huni for a quick kill and Darshan jumped in to fight back against Reignover and one more, weakening Reignover for Huni's killing blow. From there, CLG was free to take the first top turret.

Immortals wipe the floor with CLG. Twice.

CLG started to get a little cocky after their first win and small lead in the second game. The team stuck around too long and pushed just a little too far against Immortals, eventually paying the price. CLG took the second mid turret but lost their whole team in the process, taking four Immortals players down with them, tying the kills 11-11.

Immortals recovered quickly and immediately went for a Baron kill to push them ahead, and CLG went for revenge.

CLG just couldn't keep up and Immortals picked them off, earning Pobelter an ace. After two team wipes, CLG didn't have a chance and Immortals swept in to win the game, tying the series 1-1.

Game three got off to a slow start until both teams met in the middle of Summoner's Rift right around the 20-minute mark. Immortals ramped it up and took down four of CLG's players to one of Immortals'. CLG's Xmithie was on the run but Immortals wasn't giving up, chasing him down for a 5-1 team fight.

Almost every player in the game was putting hits on Baron but Immortals managed to get the final blow, using the buff to go on and take out four out of five CLG players, putting the game in Immortals' favor. And that's when the game got interesting

With their advantage, Immortals went on the offensive and took the fight to CLG's base. They took out the tower but CLG fought back, taking out four Immortals players and sending the fifth one running.

CLG takes a sneaky Baron kill to turn the tables

In cocky and risky move, CLG's Xmithie snuck up on Immortals while they were going for a second Baron kill. Xmithie jumped down at the perfect moment and took the killing blow on Baron, allowing the rest of CLG to move in and destroy Immortals.

In a last ditch effort to take the third game, Immortals turned it up to 11 and rushed CLG's base, managing to out-maneuver their defense -- taking out the nexus and a 2-1 lead in the series.

In game four, both teams started aggressive but quickly pulled back, mostly picking off single kills and playing smart. After a team fight, CLG found themselves with a 19-7 kill lead and sizeable gold advantage.

Most of CLG went for a Baron kill while Darshan snuck into Immortals' base and took out both nexus turrets. Immortals lost three players and couldn't put together a defense, quickly getting steamrolled. CLG tied up the series 2-2 and pushed it to its fifth and final game.

First blood led to five bloods

With the series hanging on the outcome of game five, both teams were eager to take first blood. Everyone went for the bottom lane after some close calls in the mid lane, and Immortals managed to take the first kill in the team fight, immediately traded for another. The teams were weak and kept fighting, eventually ending with Immortals in the lead 3-2 just seconds after the first kill.

A team fight developed in the jungle after CLG's Darshan was taken down and CLG got a small advantage over Immortals. CLG went on the chase after Stixxay went down, but CLG's Aphromoo and HuHi were stunned and gunned down. Xmithie went on the run and eventually was killed along with Darshan, firmly putting Immortals in the lead.

The kills kept coming and Immortals took the victory, ending game five quickly and proving the team is one of the top contenders in North America.
