2019 has been a good year for Neil Gaiman fans.

We've had the latest seasons of the author's American Gods and Lucifer, the recent Good Omens adaptation, and now there are even rumours of Sandman -- Gaiman's comic book series -- being adapted by Netflix.

And you know what's even better? It turns out the rumours are true. Well, mostly.

Sandman is a dark fantasy comic series published by DC comics, which has been running since 1989. As The Hollywood Reporter noted, there have been a number of attempts to adapt it over the years -- most recently as a feature film that would have starred Joseph Gordon-Levitt. But in the end, none have panned out.

Perhaps given the hot/cold nature of the project's history, some people seemed sceptical about the news.

But on Monday night, Gaiman took to Twitter to confirm it. "It's official!" he wrote.

DC Comics also confirmed the news in a blog post on Monday, with vague details from Netflix's VP of original series, Channing Dungey. The post iterated that the series will be executive produced by Gaiman, along with Wonder Woman screenwriter Allan Heinberg and The Dark Knight screenwriter David S. Goyer.

"We’re thrilled to partner with the brilliant team that is Neil Gaiman, David S. Goyer and Allan Heinberg to finally bring Neil’s iconic comic book series, The Sandman, to life onscreen," said Dungey.

"From its rich characters and storylines to its intricately built-out worlds, we’re excited to create an epic original series that dives deep into this multi-layered universe beloved by fans around the world."

Following his initial tweet, Gaiman went on to respond to a number of questions from his fans about the nature of the Sandman adaptation.

First, he confirmed that it will be set 30 years later than the comic.

He also confirmed some details about the number of episodes we can expect.

Gaiman went on to explain that he's co-writing the pilot, but won't be acting as showrunner.

Finally, he said that no scripts have been written for the Netflix adaptation yet.

Sounds like the project is still very much in its early stages. But that doesn't mean we can't start getting excited...
