Netflix is adding Spatial Audio support on iPhone and iPad
It took a while, but it's finally here: Netflix is currently rolling out Spatial Audio support on its iOS app.
The news initially broke on Reddit, where users reported that the feature was added to their Netflix app, and 9to5Mac confirmed it with a Netflix spokesperson.
It appears to be a slow rollout, so you might have to wait a couple of days to see the feature in your Netflix app. It won't work for everyone, though — you need to have an iPhone 7 or later or a recent iPad with iOS 14, as well as Apple's AirPods Pro or AirPods Max (see full requirements here).
Spatial Audio is Apple's fancy term for surround sound, though it also has the added feature of dynamic head tracking. In a nutshell, if you turn it on, you'll hear sound coming from all sides, which should provide a more immersive experience.
Some of Netflix's competitors, including Apple TV+, HBO Max, and Disney+, already support Spatial Audio. On the other hand, Amazon Prime does not.
