Claire Foy originated the role in 2016, followed by Olivia Colman with both actors staying on for two seasons. Staunton was cast when Season 5 was supposed to be the show's last — it will now run through Season 6.
"As an actor it was a joy to see how both Claire Foy and Olivia Colman brought something special and unique to Peter Morgan’s scripts," Staunton said in a statement at the time. "I am genuinely honored to be joining such an exceptional creative team and to be taking The Crown to its conclusion."
The Crown Seasons 1-4 are available on Netflix.
