LONDON — The publisher of the Daily Mirror is reportedly launching a new print tabloid in the UK, apparently undeterred by legacy media's shift to digital as the Independent publishes its last print edition.

Trinity Mirror will launch New Day on Feb. 29, Sky News reports. It will only publish on weekdays to start, and will initially cost 25p (36 cents).

A spokeswoman for Trinity Mirror told Mashable that the company had no comment on the reports.

According to reports, the newspaper will feature a mix of national, lifestyle and entertainment news. It was initially targeted at women but is now going after a broader audience.

There are plans for a print run of 1 million based on consumer demand, Sky News said.

The new paper seems positioned to compete with the 40p-a-copy i, which will be sold to Johnston Press for £24 million in a deal announced last week that spelled the end of the Independent's print editions.

The Guardian reported in December 2015 that Trinity Mirror was considering creating a cheaply priced tabloid such as the i.

Evgeny Lebedev, owner of the Independent, posted a series of Tweets on Wednesday defending the higher calling behind the Independent's move to stop publishing in print.

But Trinity Mirror Chief Executive Simon Fox seems to be betting that consumers will still want print titles, buying up local papers, such as those under the banner of Local World, in November 2015.

Other industry players haven't given up on print, either. Ashley Highfield, chief executive of the i's new owner, Johnston Press, told City A.M.:  “New technology comes along, but it rarely wipes out what came before it. I think people will still want print for many years to come.”
