NEW YORK — New York Fashion Week is usually fueled by an enthusiastic energy. Editors, stylists, bloggers and buyers run frantically around the city excited to see the latest collections and catch up with friends in the industry.

This season, however, the overall mood seemed less animated and more somber. Perhaps it was due to the bone-chilling temperatures that ascended over the city or the general state of the fashion industry, which is tailored more to social media spectacle than ever. In media, recent masthead upsets, editorial shifts and impending layoffs settled over the week like a dark cloud of doom.

All ages

Maybe it was an effort to keep shows young and fresh or a message of female empowerment regardless of age. Either way, this season included two infants on the runway, as well as a pair of young red-headed twins and a 94-year-old woman.

After walking around fashion week in the freezing cold, we totally get it. In the winter you do what you gotta do to keep your head warm.

Musical performances

With both industry insiders and consumers becoming tired of traditional runway presentations, something has to change. Maybe all we need is music, sweet music.
